Community Partner Award: 5th Grade Teachers of the Coastal Kids Quiz 2002-2017

The Coastal Kids Quiz (CKQ) is an annual conservation scholarship competition organized by The Project CATE Foundation (Conservation Action Through Education) in collaboration with Alabama Coastal Foundation for teams of fifth graders in Mobile and Baldwin Counties who are interested in coastal resources, conservation, and the environment. Now in its 16^th year, the CKQ has involved over 1,060 fifth grade students and 82 teachers from Mobile and Baldwin Counties since inception in 2002. Winning teams take home scholarships. To date, over $93,000 have been awarded in scholarships.

The Fifth Grade Teachers are the true backbone of this Quiz. Teachers volunteer countless hours coaching students and providing them opportunities to experience the environment and coastal natural resources.

“The Teachers are the strength and enthusiastic catalysts who really motivate the students and provide exceptional learning experiences during the study months leading up to the Quiz,” said Neil Johnston, one of the CKQ founders.

Both participating students and teachers take on studies above and beyond their regular coursework.

“Teachers appreciate the opportunity to extend curriculum into environmental education,” said Dr. Brenda Litchfield, professor of instructional design at the University of South Alabama. For students involved Litchfield hopes the program “inspires a deeper appreciation for the fragile coastal environment and shows them that even one person can make a difference.”
