Navigating Economic Shifts: Tariffs, Energy and Regulatory – March Membership Breakfast

During PEP’s March Member Breakfast, our speaker, Michael Berson, partner at Adams & Reese, LLP, explored several key economic factors, including tariffs, energy policies, and regulatory changes impacting both the industry and the local economy. Berson provided insights into the future economic outlook, emphasizing the effects these developments could have on regional business growth and economic conditions.

Key points from the presentation included:

Tariffs and Trade: The evolving tariff landscape, a significant element of President Trump’s trade policy, affects domestic inflation, supply chains, and manufacturing. Berson highlighted the roles of Congress and the White House, the potential U.S. tariffs on Chinese maritime operations, and reciprocal tariffs that could impact political considerations in swing states.

Energy and Climate: With the increasing demands on the energy grid, there is a focus on alternative energy investments. However, the current administration, alongside a GOP Congress, indicates a promotion of fossil fuels and potential rollbacks of climate programs. The session also predicted possible bipartisan efforts to alter permitting rules.

Regulatory Changes: The ongoing discussions in Congress about extending 2017 tax cuts featured fiscal and procedural hurdles. This included reconciling budget measures without affecting Medicaid, with a looming debt ceiling deadline later in the year.

Berson’s expertise in securing federal and state funding and his background in government relations enhanced the analysis, providing members with crucial insights into aligning business strategies with future economic developments.
