Evonik Celebrates 50 Years of Production in Mobile, Alabama

Evonik, one of the world’s leading specialty chemicals companies, celebrated 50 years of production at its Mobile, Alabama, site with a tree dedication and time capsule ceremony on April 24 at its Theodore campus. The event commemorated the site’s rich history while emphasizing Evonik’s ongoing commitment to the local community and future generations.

During the ceremony, Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson presented a resolution, stating: “The Mobile County Commission proudly recognizes Evonik for 50 years of production, partnership, and economic contribution to our community.” Hudson also congratulated the company’s leadership, employees, and community partners on reaching this milestone.

“A half‑century of production represents more than just longevity,” said Evonik’s Kel Boisvert, Vice President and Mobile Site Manager. “It reflects the dedication of generations of employees and our strong connection to the Mobile community. Like the tree we planted today, success requires care, responsibility, and the right conditions to grow─and that includes preparing the next generation of leaders to shape the future.”

Students from Hollinger’s Island Elementary School played a key role in the celebration, contributing artwork and written reflections envisioning life 50 years into the future. Their submissions were sealed into a time capsule, and the students joined Evonik leaders in planting a satsuma tree─a symbol of growth, continuity, and long‑term stewardship.

The satsuma tree dedication continues a tradition that began in 1976, when an orange tree was planted at the Mobile site as a symbol of innovation and performance. A newly installed plaque alongside the satsuma tree renews that message, commemorating 50 years of growth, resilience, and excellence at the site.

Evonik’s Mobile site, located in the Theodore Industrial Park in South Mobile County, began operations in 1976 and has since grown into the company’s largest manufacturing complex in North America. The campus features 28 production plants, warehouses, laboratories, utilities, wastewater treatment facilities, and administrative offices. It employs approximately 750 people and supports over 250 resident contractors.

The site manufactures specialty chemicals used in a wide range of applications, such as coating additives for wind turbine blades, lightweight structural foams for aircraft or race cars, catalysts for biodiesel production, and amino acids for optimized livestock farming. Products made in Mobile improve everyday life around the world.

As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, Evonik Mobile is also providing employees with native trees to plant at home, reinforcing the theme of growth and sustainability. Any unclaimed trees will be donated to local environmental organizations to support reforestation and erosion control efforts.
