Partners for Environmental Progress has presented a 2025 Environmental Stewardship Award to ArcelorMittal Calvert (AM/NS Calvert). The steel mill is located approximately 35 miles north of Mobile, ArcelorMittal Calvert serves industries ranging from automotive and energy to appliance manufacturing, providing high-quality steel products of various grades and coatings. Positioned along the Tombigbee River, the facility integrates sustainability into its operations while producing advanced steel for global markets.
The Project at ArcelorMittal Calvert
The award-winning project focused on replacing more than 420 outdated 1000-watt metal halide light fixtures—originally installed in 2011—with modern, high-efficiency LED lighting. Upgrades were completed across the main slab yard, two finished product storage buildings (ST2 and ST4), and the outdoor coil storage yard (ST3).
Key Project Details
The improvements were designed to address three key goals:
- Enhancing workplace safety and visibility for crane operators, maintenance crews, and logistics teams.
- Reducing environmental impact by cutting energy use nearly in half and extending bulb life tenfold.
- Promoting responsible recycling by sending retired halide bulbs to a certified recycler for reclamation of heavy metals and glass.
Environmental Benefits
Using Alabama Power’s greenhouse gas emissions factor, the project will reduce more than 210 metric tons of CO₂ annually—the equivalent of powering more than 50 homes a year or eliminating the emissions of nearly 45 passenger vehicles.
“Winning this environmental award is a proud moment for ArcelorMittal Calvert and a testament to our team’s commitment to sustainability and innovation,” said Chris Richards, CEO. “By replacing over 420 outdated fixtures with high-efficiency LED lighting, we’ve not only enhanced safety and visibility across critical operational areas, but also significantly reduced our energy consumption and carbon footprint. This project exemplifies how operational excellence and environmental stewardship go hand in hand, and it sets a powerful precedent for responsible resource management in steel manufacturing.”
“This recognition reflects the dedication and forward-thinking mindset of our entire team,” added Tony Faith, Director of Health & Safety. “The lighting retrofit project at ArcelorMittal Calvert not only modernized our facility but also delivered measurable environmental benefits—from cutting energy use nearly in half to reducing CO₂ emissions by over 210 metric tons annually. We’re proud to contribute to a safer, more sustainable workplace and to support our company’s goals through practical, impactful action.”
This initiative aligns closely with ArcelorMittal Calvert’s (AM/NS Calvert) S.T.E.E.L. Environmental Commitment, which emphasizes Sustainability, Transparency, Enhancement, Employee engagement, and Legal compliance. The retrofit project exemplifies how these principles guide operations, ensuring that economic growth and environmental responsibility remain inseparable.
