At the recent PEP Member Breakfast on July 17, 2025, Commissioner Chris Blankenship of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) shared exciting updates on major investments and opportunities for coastal Alababama and across the state.
Key Highlights:
- $85M in State Park Upgrades: New cabins, campgrounds, and facilities at Gulf and Cheaha State Parks. Water/sewer upgrades at 38 sites.
- Boating & Fishing Access: $66M in boating projects, 44 coastal recreation sites ($304M+), and expansion of the U.S.’s largest artificial reef system.
- RESTORE & GoMESA Funds: $410M in federal funds; $100M from GoMESA distributed in the past two years.
- 2025–26 Opportunities: $38M GoMESA funds available; new projects include marsh restoration and water quality improvements.
- Red Snapper Season: May 23–June 30, plus weekends.
- Charter Fishing Season: June 1–September 16.
Corporate Partnership Program
Alabama State Parks is calling on businesses to support local parks. Matched donations, impact investing, and project sponsorships are welcome, with a goal of raising $10M. Partners like Buffalo Rock and AL Power Foundation are already on board.
Innovation & Microplastics
New devices for microplastics monitoring are in development, with input from wastewater and environmental experts to ensure real-world use.
